Editorial policy
Last updated October 19, 2026
DisasterServices.com publishes practical, sourced guidance for people dealing with property damage. These are the rules every page follows.
Sources we trust, in order
- Federal and state agencies: CDC, EPA, FEMA, NIOSH, OSHA, Ready.gov, state health departments, state insurance departments and licensing boards.
- Statutes, regulations and official insurance forms.
- Scientific consensus documents and peer-reviewed research (for example, the National Academies' 2004 report on damp indoor spaces and the WHO's 2009 dampness and mould guidelines) and professional bodies such as AAAAI and ACMT.
- Industry standards bodies such as the IICRC, described from their public materials.
- Named, dated cost guides and industry research, always shown side by side rather than as a single number.
Every statistic on the site links to its source with a date. If we can't verify a claim, we leave it out.
Health claims
We follow the evidence, not the fear. We describe the health effects that agencies and consensus reviews support, label claims that current evidence does not support, and never promote unvalidated tests or treatments. Mold-health pages carry a health note and are first in line for review by a physician or industrial hygienist.
Expert review
Our goal is for every health, remediation, insurance and legal page to be reviewed by a credentialed independent expert, such as a licensed mold assessor, an IICRC-certified restoration professional, a certified industrial hygienist, a licensed public adjuster, a claims attorney or a physician. We name a reviewer on a page only after that person has actually reviewed that version, and we show the review date.
DisasterServices.com launched in October 2026. Our reviewer bench is being recruited now, so most pages currently say "Expert review pending." We would rather tell you that than imply a review that hasn't happened.
How we use AI
We use AI tools to help outline pages, draft text and assemble fact tables from the sources we list. Every page is edited and published by a named person, and every factual claim is tied to a listed source. We never use AI-generated authors, photos, reviewers, reviews or testimonials. Pages say "Drafted with AI assistance" at the bottom.
Dates and updates
"Updated" changes only when we make a substantive change: new data, changed guidance, a corrected error or a new section. Cost and insurance pages are rechecked at least every six months, and the busiest pages every two months.
Independence from advertisers
Advertisers, sponsors and partners have no say in what we write, recommend or rank. Paid placements are always labeled. See our advertising disclosure.
